Welcome to August Friends

By Irene Roth/Blog Editor

It hardly seems possible that August is already here. Summer always feels as though it stretches endlessly before us, and then suddenly we realize that the season is beginning to slip away. That realization always encourages me to slow down a little, savor the longer days, and appreciate the simple moments that make this time of year so special.

One of the highlights of my July has been spending time in Tobermory and along the shores of Georgian Bay. Between writing projects and everyday responsibilities, I’ve been able to steal away now and then to bask in the sunshine, listen to the gentle rhythm of the waves, and breathe in the cool, fresh-water breeze. There is something deeply restorative about this part of Ontario. The crystal-clear water, rugged shoreline, and peaceful beauty have been a welcome reminder that nature has a remarkable way of renewing both body and spirit. I hope you’ve been finding your own opportunities to enjoy the beauty of summer, wherever you are, because once August arrives, we know that summer is quietly beginning its journey toward autumn.

This month on the blog, I’d like to focus on something that has become increasingly important to me: the power of our voices and the stories we choose to tell. Whether you live with fibromyalgia, write for personal fulfillment, or simply want to make a positive difference in the lives of others, your experiences matter. Too often we underestimate the wisdom we’ve gained through our challenges, believing that our stories are ordinary or that no one would benefit from hearing them. Yet the opposite is often true.

Throughout August, we’ll explore what it means to find the courage to tell our stories, use our voices to encourage others, and help reshape the narrative surrounding fibromyalgia. We’ll also look at how each of us can inspire hope—not because our lives are perfect, but because we continue to move forward with resilience, compassion, and determination. Every story shared honestly has the potential to remind someone else that they are not alone.

For those of you who enjoy writing, we’ll also spend some time talking about protecting your writing life. We’ll explore practical ways to safeguard your creative time, build consistent habits, and continue making progress even when life becomes busy or chronic illness threatens to interrupt your plans. Writing doesn’t require perfect conditions; it simply asks that we return to the page, one small step at a time.

As we move through these final weeks of summer together, my hope is that you’ll continue to notice the beauty around you—the warmth of the sun, the sound of birds in the morning, a quiet walk, a conversation with a friend, or a peaceful moment with a good book. These small moments often become the memories that stay with us long after the season has ended.

Thank you for being part of this wonderful community. I’m looking forward to sharing this month’s reflections with you, and I hope they’ll encourage you to embrace your own story, protect your creativity, and discover that your words may become exactly the encouragement someone else needs.

Wishing you a beautiful August filled with sunshine, inspiration, and many moments of quiet joy.

If you’d like, I can also make this more personal and conversational so it sounds even more like your regular FibroMates blog voice.
